By default TPAssist assumes Topic Task Duration is equivalent to the effort or "work" associated
with the topic. However TPAssist will only automatically register "work" if the topic is associated
with a Resource, the theory being that if there is no resource, there isn't any work. This allows
you to place Topic with-in your map that have no work value, like cost items or Milestones.
Therefore, to incorporate "work" with-in your map, all you need to do is create topics, set the
appropriate duration and assign them a resource. TPAssist will then roll-up the work through
parent topics and maps. TPAssist also accumulates the work per resource, for example if the
task is assigned a duration of 1 day, with two resource the "work" is assumed to be 2 days. (You
can chance this default behaviour in the Financial Capabilities options, as per above).
Use the Journal Tab if you want to customise the amount of work, for example if you have a task
running over 5 days, however the actual work is no more than a couple of hours. All you need to
do is click on the work field you wish to modify and enter the amount of effort. (NB: In the
Journal Tab, performing a Double-Click on the edit text box, reverts the work item back to it's
automated value).
In addition to number of hours, days, weeks or months, TPAssist also derives the cost associated
with the work. This is achieved by multiplying the work or effort by the hourly rates associated
with the specified resources. Resource rates are maintained via the
Resource Editor.
Unlike Topic Task Duration, customised work amounts can be specified as fractions (i.e. 0.5
hours).
Effort or "Work" can be specified in terms of "Estimated", "Actual" and "Remaining". The estimated
amount is automatically derived from the Topic Task Duration. The actual amount is assumed to
be the same as the estimated amount. And the remaining amount is calculated from the topic's
percent complete (as a fraction of actual amount).
NOTE: By default work amounts, whilst recorded as fractions, they are reported as whole numbers.
You can modify this default behaviour via configuring the number decimal places in the document's
Financial Properties
.
